Writing is a solitary craft, and although you spend 90 percent of the time as a happy hermit, it’s common to suddenly snap out of a trance and realise you’ve been sitting alone in a room for several days. There’s a fine line between being happily alone and depressingly lonely. It’s all a matter of perception. So when I find myself wiping tears from the mousepad of my laptop, I like to check emails and social media to see if anyone has wandered to the contact Glenn H Mitchell page. Despite the fact that I’m infamously grumpy, sarcastic and critical, I do have a talent for making people laugh, and I always treat my readers and peers well (unless they’re dickheads). So as long as you’re not a dickhead, there’s no need to be shy.
Also remember that writers are very thick-skinned. For a young writer, rejection and criticism probably accounts for 90% of contact with the outside world. I’ve been chastised and condemned by the best (and worst) in the industry, so you needn’t pull any punches. I’d like to know what you think, and absolutely insist that if you see any errors in my work, you let me know. That kind of feedback is invaluable, and much appreciated.
Pick your favourite haunt. I try to update them all whenever there’s news, free stories or offers. Facebook and Twitter are probably the most practical places to communicate, and they also tend to get the most updates.
